Smarties can be connected to an AI assistant (Claude or ChatGPT) through MCP, an open standard that lets the assistant use Smarties on your behalf. Once connected, you can ask things like "what urgent mail did I get this week?" or "file this email under the Ferro client" in plain language, and the assistant does it with your own Smarties account.

What the assistant can see and do
The assistant has exactly your rights, no more:
- Your mailboxes only. It sees the mail of the mailboxes you added yourself, never a colleague's mailbox, and never another company.
- No attachments, no passwords. Attachments are never sent to the assistant, nor are mailbox passwords or keys.
- Email text is available only when your company keeps message bodies (otherwise the assistant sees the sender, subject, a short excerpt and the AI classification).
- No company settings. The assistant cannot read or change your company's settings, other users, or mailbox configuration.
- Changes need your OK. The two actions that change something (re-classifying an email, re-running the AI) first show you what they are about to do; they only happen after you confirm.
- You can disconnect at any time (see Disconnect below).

Connector tasks
Recurring work Smarties prepares for your clients (for example missing receipts). You see the runs of the tasks that belong to you: you are one of the task's approvers, you are assigned a step in one of its runs, or you opened one of its runs. The Smarties app shows you the same tasks.

Approvers and managers can also act on a run, always after confirming: accept or refuse a value the AI suggested
(gmx_task_confirm_value), include or exclude items (gmx_task_toggle_items), reject (gmx_task_reject), retry a blocked run (gmx_task_retry) and start a task now
(gmx_task_start). Approving or cancelling a run is done in the Smarties app only, never through an assistant.
Managers and administrators
Users with the Manager or Admin role also get the record actions (crm_describe, crm_list, crm_get,
crm_create, crm_update, crm_delete) for company records such as clients and jobs, and can link an email to a
client or a job with gmx_correct_triage. Creating and deleting records always asks for confirmation.
Connect Claude
Works with Claude Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise plans (on Team/Enterprise, an owner may first have to allow custom connectors).

- Click Add custom connector.

- An Smarties page opens: sign in with your Smarties username and password and approve the access.
- Back in a conversation, make sure Smarties is turned on in the tools menu (the + / tools button) and ask your question.
A connector added on claude.ai also appears in the desktop app (same account).
Claude Code (terminal)

Then type /mcp, choose smarties › Authenticate, and sign in in the browser window that opens.
Connect ChatGPT
Custom connectors need a paid ChatGPT plan with developer mode (the menu names below can move between ChatGPT versions).
- Open Settings › Apps & Connectors › Advanced settings and turn on Developer mode.
- Back in Apps & Connectors, click Create.

- Sign in with your Smarties username and password and approve the access.
- In a chat, pick Developer mode from the + menu, enable Smarties, and ask your question.
ChatGPT's Deep research mode is not supported (it needs search tools Smarties does not offer); normal chats work.
Access levels
When you approve the access you grant:
- Read (
crm:read): look at your mail and records. - Write (
crm:write): correct the AI's sorting and re-run it (managers: also change records). Always with your confirmation. - Stay signed in (
offline_access): the assistant keeps the connection without asking you to sign in every time.
Disconnect
- Claude: Settings › Connectors › Smarties › Disconnect (or remove).
- ChatGPT: Settings › Apps & Connectors › Smarties › Disconnect (or delete).
- Claude Code:

Troubleshooting
